Gapen Hellgrammite Jig Bodies
If the Spin Bee is the "flash," the Gapen Hellgrammite Jig Body is the "finesse." Designed to mimic the terrifyingly effective dobsonfly larvae found in rocky riverbeds, this lure is a staple for river anglers who know that smallmouth bass and trout can't resist a "hellgie" drifting through their strike zone. Pair these 1/4 oz size bodies with 1/8 oz jig for enough mass to reach the bottom but light enough to drift over rocks rather than wedging into them.
Note: This item is New Old Stock. All units are new in original packaging, though the style may differ slightly from the most recent production models.
The Ultimate "Prehistoric" Mimic
Natural hellgrammites are protein-packed power snacks for fish, but they are a pain to catch and even more painful to handle (they bite!). The Gapen Hellgrammite Body gives you that same high-protein profile without the hassle.
- Segmented Realism: The deeply ribbed, segmented body creates a lifelike "crunchy" texture that fish hold onto longer, giving you more time to set the hook.
-
Micro-Movement: Features soft, fluttering legs and a split tail that pulsate with the slightest current or rod tip twitch, mimicking the frantic crawling of a dislodged insect.
-
River-Tested Design: Specifically engineered to be fished in "slip" mode—drifting naturally downstream through rock piles and current seams where big smallmouth lie in wait.
-
Durable Soft Plastic: Built to withstand multiple strikes and snaggy environments, so you spend more time fishing and less time re-rigging.
Master the "Gapen Drift"
To fish the Hellgrammite like a pro, use the method pioneered by Dan Gapen himself:
-
The Quarter-Cast: Cast slightly upstream into a current seam.
-
High-Stick Retrieve: Keep your rod tip high to minimize line drag on the water. Let the current "tumble" the jig along the bottom.
-
The "Slip" Technique: As the lure moves past you downstream, slowly lower your rod tip to maintain a natural, "dead-drift" pace.
-
The Strike: Most hits occur right as the line tightens at the end of the drift (the "swing"). Be ready for a aggressive "thump."
