The Angler’s Ultimate Insurance: Knipex 71 01 200 CoBolt®
For a serious angler, a high-quality bolt cutter isn't just a tool—it’s essential safety gear. The Knipex 71 01 200 CoBolt® Compact Bolt Cutter is widely regarded as the gold standard for cutting heavy-duty hooks, especially when speed and precision are critical for the safety of both the fish and the fisherman.
Why the CoBolt® is an Angler’s Best Friend
When a 4/0 treble hook is buried past the barb, you don't want a standard pair of pliers. You need a tool that "snaps" through hardened steel like it's butter.
-
Effortless Hook Removal: Thanks to its high-leverage joint, the CoBolt® allows you to cut through thick, saltwater-grade hooks (including 6X strong trebles) with one hand.
-
Safety First: In emergency "hook-in-skin" situations, the CoBolt® provides a clean, instant bypass cut. This allows you to push the shank through or remove the lure body quickly to minimize trauma.
-
Micro-Structured Jaws: High-end hooks are slick. The CoBolt’s unique micro-textured cutting edge "bites" into the metal, preventing the hook from sliding forward and ensuring a perfect cut on the first squeeze.
-
Compact & Salt-Ready: At just 8 inches, it fits perfectly in a tackle bag, boat console, or a wading belt. The black atramentized finish and oil-hardened chrome vanadium steel provide excellent resistance to the elements.

Pro Tip: The "Snip and Slide"
When a hook is embedded in a fish (or a finger), do not try to pull it out backward. Use the CoBolt® to snip the shank of the hook near the eyelet or just below the barb. By removing the bulky lure or the eyelet, you can slide the remaining wire through the puncture site much more smoothly, reducing tissue damage and stress for the fish.
Maintenance for Longevity
While the CoBolt® is built from premium German chrome vanadium steel, the marine environment is harsh. Follow these steps to keep your cutters "surgery-ready":
-
Rinse After Salt: If you use them on a boat or in the surf, rinse them with fresh water as soon as you get home to remove salt crystals.
-
Dry Thoroughly: Wipe them down with a clean cloth, ensuring no moisture remains in the joint.
-
Light Lubrication: Apply a drop of multi-purpose oil or a marine-grade corrosion inhibitor (like Lanocote or WD-40 Specialist) to the center bolt joint and the cutting edges.
-
The "Paper Test": Occasionally test the edge on a piece of paper. If it snags, check for metal burrs that may have transferred from a hook.
