Tom’s Custom Musky Lures: The Gen 1 Manatee – Elite Hybrid Subsurface Glider
Unmatched Subsurface Action and Elite Custom Craftsmanship
From the workshop of master bait builder Tom Harrison comes one of the most adaptable tools a big-game angler can tie on. The Gen 1 Manatee is a masterclass in custom lure engineering, expertly designed to bridge the gap between a classic dive-and-rise bait and a responsive subsurface glider. Hand-poured from premium, high-durability epoxy and meticulously hand-sanded, this legendary lure is built to handle the bone-crushing strikes and structural abuse that come with trophy musky hunting.
The Gen 1 Difference: Enhanced Buoyancy and Tail Flex
As the original design that started it all, the Gen 1 Manatee features a distinct, highly sought-after build configuration. Engineered with slightly more buoyancy than later iterations, the Gen 1 rises with a lively, high-floating cadence that excels when fishing over complex structure. Additionally, its tail section is crafted to be slightly more pliable, delivering a softer, more fluid secondary kick that coaxes cautious, pressured fish into striking. This bait is famous for its elite coverage of the water column—whether you are working over the tops of shallow weeds or digging down into deep river channels.
Key Features
-
Triple-Threat Action: The Manatee can be walked across the surface like a topwater, ripped just under the surface for fast reaction strikes, or dived deep by keeping your rod tip down.
-
Handcrafted Precision: Each bait is individually poured, sanded, and hand-painted by Tom Harrison, ensuring a level of balance and detail that mass-produced lures cannot replicate.
-
High-Float Buoyancy: The Gen 1 engineering features increased buoyancy, allowing it to back out of heavy cover quickly and hang temptingly in the strike zone during the pause.
-
Pliable Tail Kick: A softer, more flexible tail section generates a subtle side-to-side flutter on the rise, mimicking a dying baitfish and triggering trailing predators.
-
Heavy-Duty Components: Equipped with robust split rings and ultra-sharp hooks sized specifically to balance the bait’s increased buoyancy while maximizing hookup ratios.
Why Fish the Manatee?
The Manatee is the ultimate search bait for pressured waters. Because it transitions from a rhythmic glide to a vertical dive-and-rise in a single cast, it allows you to show fish multiple actions without changing your lure. Its solid epoxy construction means it will never waterlog or lose its action after a violent fish battle or a hard collision with rocks and timber.

💡 Pro Tip: The "High-Float Trigger"
Because the Gen 1 features enhanced buoyancy, use its upward rise to your advantage near heavy weed edges. Pull the bait down sharply into a pocket, then pause completely to let it float backward and upward. If a musky is tracking the lure, give the rod tip two very short, sharp downward twitches mid-rise. This forces the pliable tail to shiver and kick sideways without moving the bait forward. This subtle, erratic pulse right in the middle of a fast rise is often exactly what an undecided fish needs to see to force a reactive strike right at the boat.
