How to Use Mustad Weedless Treble Hooks (W3551)

Using a weedless treble hook correctly can be the difference between a frustrating day of pulling up grass and a successful day landing fish. Here is how to get the most out of your Mustad W3551 hooks:

1. Proper Bait Alignment When using live bait (like minnows or leeches), hook the bait through the lips or just behind the dorsal fin using one of the three hook points. Ensure the wire guards are positioned so they sit just above the hook points without being compressed.

2. Adjusting the Wire Guards While these hooks come pre-set, you can slightly "tune" the wire guards. For extremely thick timber or lily pads, ensure the wires are centered directly over the barbs. For thinner grass or "slush," you can slightly widen them to increase the exposure of the hook point for an even faster hook set.

3. The Hook Set Technique Because of the wire guards, you may want to use a slightly firmer "snap" when setting the hook compared to a standard open treble. This ensures the guard collapses fully and the point penetrates the fish's mouth instantly.

4. Maintenance After a Strike After every fish caught or every heavy snag escaped, check the wire guards. If they have been bent out of alignment, simply press them back into their original position over the hook point to maintain their weedless integrity.

Pro Tip for Heavy Cover

The Size 1 and Size 2 hooks are excellent for larger live baits in murky water, while the Size 4 is a fantastic choice for a more subtle presentation when the fish are pressured but still hiding deep in the weeds.
