Southern Pro Lit'L Hustler: The Classic Crappie Tube

The Southern Pro Lit'L Hustler is widely considered one of the best-selling crappie tubes in the world. Featuring a classic hollow-body design and high-action tentacles, this bait is engineered to mimic the small baitfish and aquatic insects that panfish thrive on. Whether you're fishing a 1", 1.5", or 2" model, its lifelike pulse in the water makes it a staple for Crappie, Bluegill, Perch, and even Trout.

Proven Rigging Methods

The Lit'L Hustler is designed for efficiency and can be adapted to almost any panfish scenario:

  • Internal Jig Head: The standard method. Slide a 1/32 oz or 1/16 oz tube jig head inside the hollow body until the eyelet pokes through the plastic. This creates a seamless, aerodynamic profile.

  • Vertical Jigging: Perfect for fishing deep brush piles or standing timber. Drop the bait straight down and use subtle rod-tip twitches to make the tentacles flare.

  • Under a Slip Float: A deadly spring technique. Suspend the tube at the exact depth where fish are holding. The slight "rocking" of the float in the waves provides all the action you need.

  • Dock Shooting: Due to its hollow body and aerodynamic shape, the Lit'L Hustler is a favorite for "shooting" (slingshotting) lures far under low-hanging docks where slabs hide in the shade.

Pro Tip: The "Spiral Fall" Rigging Trick

Standard internal rigging usually results in a straight vertical drop, but you can give the Lit'L Hustler a "death spiral" action that mimics a wounded minnow.

The Secret: When inserting your jig head, don't center the eyelet perfectly. Instead, push the eyelet through the side of the tube about an 1/8th of an inch away from the center nose. This creates an off-balance weight distribution. As the bait falls, the water resistance hits the asymmetrical nose and forces the tube to spiral and glide in a circle. This unpredictable movement is often what triggers a strike from "lookers" that are following the bait but are hesitant to bite a straight-falling lure.
